The Economic Development Specialist will enhance and maintain the Department's online information in addition to interacting frequently with existing and potential businesses and investors and will have the opportunity to provide excellent customer service and reliable, useful information.
You will also work closely with the director to build the systems and strategies for a high performing economic development organization.
Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities Location One Information System (LOIS) Maintain current data on site and building records (including tax rates; water and sewer capacity, ISO ratings, distance to transportation facilities, contact information, community data, etc.
) Work with Engineering and Community Development Departments to change/add new maps.
Monitor commercial/industrial broker communications and websites and modify records as required; communicate with brokers to verify information.
Field verify the accuracy of listings to ensure correct listing brokerage, availability, etc.
Take photographs of sites and buildings and edit them to display in LOIS.
Coordinate with DSM Partnership colleagues and contractors to update LOIS listings.
Write concise, useful community and property summaries for Community Information sections and for individual records.
Regularly enhance LOIS by rewriting text and adding/changing photographs and attachments.
Build and maintain relationships with brokerage firms to see the value in providing information to the Department to ensure accuracy of LOIS records for project responses.
Project Response Work independently and as a Department team member to provide information to brokers and economic development partners on inquiries for available space or land and to complete formal requests for information.
Compile project responses and deliver to client or economic development partner in electronic or hard copy format.
Community Marketing and Relationship Building Identify the need for and coordinate the completion of economic development-related maps, informational and promotional materials.
Maintain accuracy and enhance the Economic Development Department website with new sections, downloadable files, statistical information, revised text, maps and photography.
Work independently and as a Department team member to manage community marketing and industry relations events.
Coordinate and create content for presentations to industry groups and conduct follow-up.
Work independently and as a Department team member to contribute to and manage marketing initiatives and development of collateral material.
Coordinate with Economic Development partners to ensure Urbandale is accurately represented on Partner websites when applicable; promote Partners on Urbandale Economic Development Department website.
Maintain accurate Department contact records and build/maintain distribution lists.
Represent the City in local and regional economic development meetings, conferences and trade shows.
Represent the Department and City in a thoroughly professional, courteous and helpful manner, exemplifying the belief that our success lags their success.
Represent department at school districts serving Urbandale to facilitate connections to Urbandale businesses for workforce development initiatives.
Coordinate monthly content in custom Business Record publication including business interviews and review of feature business article, photography and other written sections.
Service to Existing Business Maintain records on Urbandale businesses:
in LOIS, various survey tools and Departmental files.
Schedule and conduct, independently or as part of a team, visits with existing businesses.
Send information from existing business visits to Greater Des Moines Partnership for entry into survey tools, when appropriate; Analyze existing business visit data on annual basis and prepare a summary report.
Serve existing businesses by providing information and coordinating with other departments to help address issues raised by businesses.
Develop a good working relationship with Economic Development partners to ensure coordinated response to existing business needs.
Department Support Assist with Department record organization, electronic archiving and purging.
Provide back-up in the Director's absence to represent the Department and to respond to inquiries and emergent needs.
Assist in coordinating and co-lead with Director meetings of the Economic Development Advisory board including scheduling, note taking, packet preparation, room reservation, refreshment preparation, AV equipment, etc.
Independently or as a part of a Department team, conduct research and analysis necessary for preparation of reports to other Departments, the City Manager, Economic Development Advisory Board, City Council and Economic Development Partners.
Facilitate department completion of specific activities or projects identified in City Council's Strategic Plan.
Provide oral or written reports to City elected officials and staff, economic development stakeholders/partners and the public.
Apply for and coordinate grants for economic development activities.
Coordinate seasonal internship activities:
develop work plan and monitor progress on its execution.
Provide support and coaching to the seasonal intern.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or requested by Director or City Manager's Office Typical Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Economic Development, Public Administration, Business Administration/Management, Real Estate or related field required Master's Degree in related field preferred Four (4) years' work experience in commercial/industrial real estate, economic development, municipal planning, public works, communications or other work setting directly applicable to the requirements of this position Valid Driver's License required Supplemental Information The Civil Service testing process will consist of a phone interview and an oral board interview.
Those meeting minimum qualifications and obtaining a minimum passing score will advance to the phone interview phase.
Those passing the phone interview with a minimum score of 80% or higher will be invited to the oral board interviews.
Those passing the oral board interview phase with a score of 80% or higher will be placed on the certified list of candidates eligible for hire.
